Radical Grace: The Only Message for England! « Planet Augsburg

Have we gone too far in our zeal for the gospel when we compare God’s Law with Islamic Sharia law? Do we really think God is (or was) that oppressive? I know the answer for you theonomists, but I want to hear something from the anti-theonomic crowd. Does this make you even in the least uncomfortable?

    Hi Ron,

I’m flattered that you would link to me, thank you (even if it is out of disagreement), if I can ever return the favor, believe me, I will! :)

I clarified myself in the post on our page, but I’ll be glad to do it here as well, because I think your paragraph clarifies your disagreement. Sharia Law is obviously not revealed by God in Holy Scriptures, but we do know that everyone has a conscience that bears testimony to right and wrong, it is however twisted by our depravity. Sharia law is a clear example of a twisted conscience, and what is called the “Delusion of the Law”, that by fulfilling Sharia or any work you can be right with God. With that said, when men seek to justify themselves by their works, a proper preaching of Law & Gospel is necessary.

I’m not saying I preached the Law & Gospel rightly, and I’m pretty sure it had a good touch of “cheesiness” to it, but proper preaching of the Law should always uncover sin and show that man is not justified by the law, but on the contrary condemned by the Law; the law then, prepares the way for the Gospel, which has nothing to do with what we must do, but everything to do with what Christ has done in redeeming, propitiating, justifying, and reconciling us to God, etc. That was my intention of the post, and in that sense, Grace is radical because it goes completely against what the basic principles of the world teach us.
